Understanding Waist-Hip Ratio

The Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a simple yet powerful measurement that compares the circumference of your waist to that of your hips. It's a reliable indicator of body fat distribution and overall health risks.

Unlike BMI which only considers height and weight, WHR provides insight into where your body stores fat. Research shows that abdominal fat (around the waist) poses greater health risks than fat stored around the hips and thighs.

Why WHR Matters

  • Identifies central obesity and associated health risks
  • Better predictor of cardiovascular disease than BMI alone
  • Indicator of metabolic syndrome and diabetes risk
  • Reflects hormonal balance and body fat distribution

How to Measure

  1. Measure your waist at the smallest point (usually just above the belly button)
  2. Measure your hips at the widest point (around the buttocks)
  3. Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement

Male Health Standards

  • Low Risk: WHR ≤ 0.90
  • Moderate Risk: WHR 0.91-0.99
  • High Risk: WHR ≥ 1.00

Female Health Standards

  • Low Risk: WHR ≤ 0.80
  • Moderate Risk: WHR 0.81-0.85
  • High Risk: WHR ≥ 0.86
